———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–<\/p>\n The Lawa people are a small minority hill tribe group which has settlements on the mountains and in the forests around north Thailand. They are a tribe which has its own customs, way of life, and culture, and traditionally they have believed in the stories and rituals of spirits. Virtually every Lawa village venerates the spirits, and gives offerings or sacrifices to the spirits all year long. They believe the spirits have provided things for them, therefore they should offer respect and worship them at all times. If someone among the Lawa is hurt or sick, they believe someone must have done something wrong or sinful to offend the spirits who are their overlords. Therefore they give offerings and sacrifices hoping to exchange these for their lives or health returned to them by the spirits. The Lawa people have done this for a long time.<\/p>\n Sometime around 1935-1940, there was a young woman from La-Uub Village named Khamsang. She had a problem with her health: leprosy on her cheek and nose. When the other villagers heard she had leprosy, they were very afraid and began to show hatred towards her, because they believed that leprosy was very contagious. So they felt that Khamsang must leave the village. \u00a0Afterwards, Ms. Khamsang and her older brother named Mr. Long heard that in Chiang Mai city there was a hospital which could cure leprosy. So her brother took her to receive treatment there. During that time, Khamsang and Long had to travel by foot many days, because in those days roads for automobiles did not yet go to Amphoe (district) MaeSariang.<\/p>\n When Khamsang got to Chiang Mai, she checked in to McCormick Hospital, and received treatment from doctors who were Christian. Missionaries also took care of and invested in Khamsang, and this was something very surprising, because in their home village, their neighbors hated them because of her contagious condition. The missionaries\u2019 kind treatment gave great joy to Khamsang and Long, as did the hospital\u2019s warm welcome and good medical care. The missionaries also shared the Gospel with the two siblings, and after hearing, Khamsang and Long decided to believe in Jesus!<\/p>\n After a period of treatment, Khamsang returned to her home village of La-Uub, and a group of missionaries later went to follow up with Khamsang in her home village. The group travelled via Amphoe (district) Mae-Jam of Chiang Mai province, and while travelling they came across many Lawa villages, such as Ban Hou, Ban Pa, Koknoi, La-Aang Nuea, La-Aang Tai, and eventually arrived at La-Uub village. There they met up with Ms. Khamsang and her family. The missionaries proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the villagers to hear.<\/p>\n At that time, five families in La-Uub village submitted to Christ and forsook venerating the spirits, announcing that they would henceforth believe in Jesus. But they were not able to stand firm for very long, because World War II began, and the missionaries had to return to their home countries. So these new Christian families did not have anybody to take care of them spiritually. Eventually they all returned to worshipping the spirits. As far Ms. Khamsang, she moved to Chiang Mai and there found a husband.<\/p>\n In 1951, a new group of missionaries came from New Tribes Mission to share the Gospel in Thailand, with a focus on the various minority hill-tribes. NTM shared the Gospel with the Lawa tribe first of all the tribes, as the first tribe which the missionaries met was a group of Lawa people who had immigrated to the Amphoe MaeSariang district. \u00a0The first two people who came and evangelized among the Lawa and studied the Lawa language are Mr. Eugene Nelson, named NoiKaew in Thai, and Mr. Charles Wick, named NaanPeng in Thai. After they had studied some Lawa language, these two missionaries began to visit Lawa villages in the rugged mountain areas, La-Uub village being the first village they visited. But because both of these men were unmarried, the villagers of La-Uub said to them, \u201cWe will enter into your group when you bring your leader here.\u201d<\/p>\n On February 27, 1956, another missionary family moved to the area from Kanchanaburi province of Thailand, the family of Pastor Don Chalater. \u00a0They took the train from Central Thailand to Chiang Mai city, and then rode in a small airplane from there to Mae Sariang district in order to join hands in evangelism with the two missionaries who had come to that area already. \u00a0In that year, all three men went up into the mountain areas to visit and share the Gospel with Lawa people. They went to La-Uub village, and in that year another five families from that village believed in Jesus Christ. They came to understand that the families who believed were the ones who had believed previously. The three missionaries rented a house in MaeSariang district, and when they could not travel further up into the mountains, they shared the Gospel with the Lawa people in MaeSariang.<\/p>\n In 1957 at Ban Phae village of MaeSariang district there was one family who believed in Jesus Christ. It was the family of Ms. Booy. After that, there were more believers both in MaeSariang and around various villages of the mountains. In that time, most of the Lawa people who became Christians made decisions to believe as entire families, or as groups of relatives.<\/p>\n Leaders during this era, especially the leaders of spirit worship, had a lot of influence. In general, village leaders greatly used their influence, and every villager under them was expected to give proper respect as well as obey them. Every year, there were many occasions of sacrifices and offerings to the spirits of the village. \u00a0Villagers were expected to raise funds to gather together and purchase supplies for feasts for the spirits, according to the plans of the village leader. Therefore, when somebody announced that they had believed in God, they knew they would be cut off and excluded from village society and likely lose their rights in making a living. If they fell upon hard times, they would have no other villagers care for them, invest in them, or help them.<\/p>\n The first believers during the founding of the Lawa church did not trust in Christ because they understood the truth. But in general, they became Christians to escape poverty, sickness, and compulsion to make offerings to the spirits. Missionaries during that time focused on teaching that if the Lawa believed in Jesus Christ, they could escape from appeasing the spirits, because Jesus has power over spirits, demons, and Satan. When there was evangelism with this focus, it made the village leaders who still worshipped the spirits very angry and vengeful. Instead of opening hearts, it closed hearts, because most of the Lawa still trusted in the spirits.<\/p>\n Many people wanted to mix their new faith with their former ways of life and their ancestral animism. This caused arguments, controversy, and many to be offended with each other, and some reverted back to spirit-veneration. Even though there were great numbers of believers, most of them still were fleshly and immature in their faith.<\/p>\n The motivation which caused many people to be interested in and decide to believe in Jesus Christ in the beginning of evangelism amongst the Lawa people, we are able to summarize into four main issues as follows:<\/p>\n Before that time among the Lawa, there was nobody who had an education or was literate. Then missionaries during the beginning phases of evangelization began teaching Lawa how to read using English letters. Many Lawa people were interested in this, and studied until they could read and write, especially young men and women from La-Uub village. At that time, almost all of these young people could read.<\/p>\n Previously, the Lawa hardly knew what a song was. They had never used a word translated as \u201csing.\u201d They only used the Lawa words transliterated as \u201cjoya\u201d or \u201cchia.\u201d But after there began to be Lawa believers and they started to use songs with melodies, the group of believers therefore began to use the word \u201cchuutchia\u201d in place of the word \u201cjoyachia.\u201d Truthfully, the word \u201cchuut\u201d the Lawa borrowed from the Thai word \u201csuad\u201d [a Buddhist chant], which is a word many religions use when doing various religious activities. \u00a0The Lawa people were very happy to have songs or \u201crasoumchia\u201d of their own, which were also in their very own language. Therefore this caused many people to be interested and join the Christian faith.<\/p>\n Missionaries who came to proclaim the Gospel among the Lawa had a goal to translate the Bible into the Lawa tribe\u2019s own language, but there were many problems and obstacles. The most important problem was the Lawa language itself, because each Lawa village had its own language or dialect of Lawa. \u00a0Because of this, the missionaries and Lawa leaders of the first generation church had to meet together to chose a standard \u201ccentral\u201d Lawa language for the Lawa church. So they chose to use the language of La-Uub village to be the standard for Lawa language to use in translating the Bible. Thus in 1963 they were able to begin translating the Bible into Lawa. There were many periods of corrections or revisions to the translation, and finally the entire Old and New Testaments were fully completed in 2001.<\/p>\n A great cause for rejoicing, and something which was very impressive regarding the new Lawa believers, was their desire to go out and share the Gospel. Not only did they evangelize in their own villages, but they also went out to other Lawa villages. \u00a0Sometimes they went out with a group of missionaries, and other times they went out in groups of Lawa evangelists, or even one person alone. Even though they did not have a lot of [biblical or ministry] knowledge, the Lawa evangelists would usually share examples from their own experience: particularly their testimonies of escaping from appeasing the spirits when they became Christians. \u00a0They saw some fruit during that time, because many Lawa were beginning to tire of appeasing the spirits, as they were finding out that they had been deceived by satan.<\/p>\n When evangelism became more frequent, it caused many other Lawa villages to become Christian. It started in La-Uub village., then spread to Ban Phae, Ban Paapae, Ban Dong, Ban Santisuk, Ban Kokluang, La-Aangtai, Mae Su, Ban Saam, La-Aangnuea, Ban Koknoi, Ban Pae, Huay Saay, Thaa Songkhaew, Ban Maetia, Ban Dongmai, Ban Tun, Nong Maela, Mae Laanoi, Chang Mou, Omphaay, and Santitum village.<\/p>\n Since 1980, the Lawa church has seen the number of believers increase rapidly as it expanded geographically. One cause of this expansion was leaders that were strong and knowledgeable enough in the Scriptures to preach, teach, and lead using the Bible in their own native language. \u00a0In 1990, the leaders of the Lawa church felt they needed to join together to be a part of ACT Thailand. So they sent representatives to meet together during that year\u2019s annual ACT meeting, with Pastor Don Chalater, Pastor Maanop Kaewsai, and Pastor Bunterm Sudthithksgiarti also present to observe. On July 27, 1990, the Lawa district churches officially became a part of ACT Thailand.
